Reminder for Wednesday, June 1, 2016

This Wednesday,  at Cordova Creek spillway on the American River, 11:30a.m until approximately 1:50 p.m. we will be performing the routine clean up/survey operation, as done before, this consisting of: digital photos taken of areas of the spillway, and of any and all discarded artifacts  (litter), visual assessment of the animals present, the systematic collection of anthropogenic pollutants (litter), the documentation and removal of these pollutants (photographed, counted, categorized and bagged), the spillway water Ph carefully measured and logged, then the final pics taken of the spillway, and removal and disposal of trash.
Hammerdirt will continue these operations in the future, and will also include the addition of water testing for pollutants and biological contaminants that may be present in this watershed. See you there.

Results for 5/25/2016,CCM

382 pieces, spillway Ph 8.9, time spent,3hrs, notes: creek water flow is back up to the usual (exact) rate of flow...sunny sky, typical take as far as litter goes, fallen branches caught much litter, esp. snack pkg, plastic bottles and straws. Again, much cig butts and cylindrical Styrofoam bits. Also of note, no living visible : crayfish, or fish, or frogs,tadpoles,etc. in the spillway water. Saw 1 centimeter size juvenile toad near the water, it looked alive and normal. Septic smell has diminished or disappeared. Construction crew continues the grading near bridge, heres some pics.

5_18_2016 results

CCM spillway Ph.8.9, 247 pieces, the "creek" water flow slowed to a trickle, for the first time since we began monitoring here, due to construction. I noted no living animals in the water, except dragonfly nymphs, and various worms. Many dead crayfish. It should be noted, that most water in the spillway is likely from the AR

Results for Cordova Creek spillway on the American River

389 pieces, much cigarette  butts, and small uniform styrene (foam) cylinder shaped bits. Also of note, many freshly dead crayfish, but only three live ones. No other visible aquatic life! As always, septic  oder at water surface. Construction crew is upon bike trails bridge. Spillway water Ph 8.6. And my tarp is at the dry cleaning,lol.
